Beyond the Bloom: The Invisible Season

Beyond the Bloom: The Invisible Season forms part of Dr. Jean-René Leblanc’s ongoing creative research exploring the expressive and conceptual potential of infrared photography as a method for engaging with what lies beyond ordinary human perception. Through the altered visual language produced by infrared imaging, this body of work investigates how photography can reveal unseen emotional, atmospheric, and cultural dimensions embedded within the landscape.

While the project is primarily rooted in the symbolic and cultural presence of the Sakura, it also extends into a broader series of landscapes encountered throughout Japan, from iconic sites such as the Golden Temple to the pathways surrounding Arashiyama. In these images, infrared photography becomes more than a technical process; it functions as a research-creation methodology that transforms familiar spaces into speculative and affective territories shaped by light, memory, temporality, and cultural imagination.

The cherry blossoms emerge simultaneously as a deeply local cultural experience and as a global phenomenon mediated through tourism, photography, and collective desire. By shifting the visible spectrum into an almost otherworldly aesthetic, the work moves beyond straightforward documentation toward a contemplative exploration of impermanence and perception. These images seek not only to represent the beauty of the Sakura and the Japanese landscape, but also to make visible the invisible, revealing how atmosphere, emotion, memory, and technological mediation intersect within contemporary experiences of place.

Energy Stories Lab

The Energy Stories Lab is collaborative and transdisciplinary, combining ethnography with new forms of art and visualization, including augmented reality (AR), 3D object making, collective mapping and GIS. We highly value collaborative community-based digital storytelling methods, such as PhotoVoice, VideoVoice and also novel approaches to oral and life history.
