Congratulations to Gerry Straathof on Receiving an Alberta Graduate Excellence Scholarship (AGES)

We are proud to share that Gerry Straathof (he/him), a PhD candidate in Anthropology at the University of Calgary, has been awarded the Alberta Graduate Excellence Scholarship (AGES), which recognizes outstanding academic achievement in graduate studies.

Gerry is an artist and researcher whose work focuses on interpreting the remains of settler culture. Over the past decade, he has refined his creative research practice through transdisciplinary training, holding both an MFA and an MSc in Computational Media Design.

His doctoral research in Anthropology builds on these skills, shifting from telling his own stories to helping others share theirs. Centered in Foothills County, Alberta, Gerry’s project explores the heritage and history of small towns, particularly how residents relate to their industrial past. Through collaborative research-creation, he seeks innovative ways to collect community memories and share them both locally and nationally.

Congratulations, Gerry, on this well-deserved recognition of your achievements and contributions to community-engaged research!

Energy Stories Lab

The Energy Stories Lab is collaborative and transdisciplinary, combining ethnography with new forms of art and visualization, including augmented reality (AR), 3D object making, collective mapping and GIS. We highly value collaborative community-based digital storytelling methods, such as PhotoVoice, VideoVoice and also novel approaches to oral and life history.
